Construction Career Opportunities

‘A lot of folks still believe a career in construction is about getting out there with a shovel in your hand and performing manual labor,’ says Chris O’Hala, The Hartford Director of Construction. And while construction careers do involve a degree of hands-on work, ‘there are so many other opportunities in the industry.’

It is these exciting opportunities that the construction industry will be offering in abundance throughout 2024. To keep pace with 2023’s progression, the industry will need to ‘attract an estimated 546,000 additional workers on top of the normal pace of hiring to meet the demand for labor.’

If you’re considering embarking on a career in construction, now is an excellent time to take the leap. But what kind of construction career opportunities are available to you?

Construction Career Opportunities for You

Construction is an attractive industry because of the breadth of roles and opportunities available. From trade-related entry-level positions to roles in architecture and construction management, there is a role out there for everyone.

Check out the opportunities below to get a feel for what your construction career could look like…

Architects and Design Professionals

There is always a demand for skilled architects within the construction industry. In this role, you’ll work closely with clients, engineers and construction teams alike to bring ideas to life with carefully and accurately designed blueprints. If you’re an established architect, search for roles that match your previous experience. Or, if you’re just starting out on your architecture career path, seek out experience placements and apprenticeship-style roles to get you started.

Project Managers

Project management is an exciting opportunity for individuals making a move to construction from other industries. It allows you to use your transferable people, management and organisational skills to coordinate and oversee construction projects from start to finish.

This is also an excellent benchmark to aim for for if you’re currently working your way up the construction career ladder. If that’s the case for you, start with junior project management roles and progress from there.

Skilled Tradespeople

Of course, the success of the construction industry is underpinned by its skilled trade workforce. Carpenters, electricians, plumbers and other skilled tradespeople are responsible for laying the foundations of construction projects, ensuring optimum functionality and safety. If you’re searching for a more hands-on, labor-focused role, consider training in a trade – it really will take you anywhere as far as the construction industry is concerned.

Your Construction Career

Construction career opportunities are plentiful. Not only do they offer a range of skills, levels and progression opportunities for all, but they also come with a range of benefits. Job stability, financial benefits, high levels of job satisfaction and fulfilment and the chance to work on projects that shape communities and society are all benefits listed by those currently enjoying a construction career.
