The Four Sectors of Solar Energy

Manufacturing

The manufacturing sector of the solar energy industry is perfect for those with backgrounds in engineering, tech or manufacturing itself. A role in this sector will see you involved in the process of physically creating system components.

These components may include solar modules or racking equipment, all vital parts of solar photovoltaic systems.

The manufacturing sector is one of the biggest employers within the solar energy industry, with research suggesting it currently employs ‘15% of the solar workforce.’

System Design

If you have a background in science and engineering, a role in the Solar System Design sector could be for you. Roles in this area will require you to have expert knowledge of site assessment and the solar resource, as well as things like the National Electric Code.

You’ll be required to get involved with tasks like designing system specs, developing procedures and safety standards and supporting installation teams.

This is an incredibly innovative sector and allows for plenty of exciting design opportunities.

Project Development

Away from the more hands-on, technical side of the sector, Solar Project Development might be the right fit for you if you have prior experience in project management.

A role in project Development means you’ll be working on seeing through the process of selling and installing solar PV systems.

You’ll utilise your marketing and sales skills while working closely with customers to provide them with an appropriate proposal and, eventually, a contract.

Installation / Operations

The final sector of the solar energy industry is an excellent match for those with electrical or engineering backgrounds. Your task will be to turn designs into systems that are fully operating and efficient, whether that be commercial installation or working within solar parks.

You’ll also be responsible for the monitoring and maintenance of these systems, some of which have lifespans of up to 25 years.
