What Skills are Needed for Renewable Energy?

The Renewable Energy industry requires a workforce of dedicated, motivated and skilled individuals to function.

In fact, the IRENA states that in the coming years, ‘the foundation of a strong workforce will be pivotal in the global transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.’

With so many sectors looking to recruit, it’s essential to understand the skills employers will be looking for in a candidate to give yourself the best chance of success in one of the fastest-growing industries in the world.

Whether it’s soft skills like communication and social awareness or more technical skills like a STEM background or installation experience, honing these skills before you embark on your renewable energy industry will give you a substantial advantage.

What Skills are Needed for Renewable Energy Careers?

As the renewable energy sector is so vast, there are many skills that employers may be looking for. However, the three skills below will be integral to the majority of roles across the renewable energy industry.

Good Communication

The renewable energy industry relies on collaboration. Your role won’t necessarily be limited to one department, meaning you’ll need strong communication skills to enable you to liaise with other professionals across the industry.

For example, if you’re looking at a career in solar panel installation, you’ll need to be able to communicate well with site teams and project managers to ensure installation goes to plan and meets the specified criteria.

Clear communication really is key when it comes to being successful in your renewable energy role.

Social Awareness

The reason the renewable energy exists is to improve the way we consume the earth’s resources in order to preserve it. As a member of the renewable energy workforce, you’ll need to have a strong awareness of the part you play in this sector and the difference your role makes.

This ensures that your motivation to succeed in this sector is coming from a place of deep understanding of what the renewable energy sector is moving towards.

Being able to showcase this skill to employers is an excellent way to showcase your dedication to your role and the industry as a whole.

A STEM Background

Of course, as well as the above soft skills, you also may need to demonstrate some more specific skills in your area of expertise. The most sought-after skills when it comes to renewable energy are those learnt via a background in STEM.

If you have proven experience in science technology, engineering or maths related roles (or all three!), you’ll be setting yourself apart from other candidates and your previous experience will allow you to progress toward more senior roles.

Your Renewable Energy Skills

When it comes to renewable energy, a mixture of soft skills and technical experience will stand you in good stead for embarking on a successful career path.
