Fleet Maintenance Manager

Reports To: Director of Safety, Fleet & Risk

Job Summary

We are seeking a Fleet Maintenance Manager to oversee the performance, reliability, and lifecycle management of a large fleet of utility-grade equipment. This role leads shop operations, preventative maintenance programs, and repair strategy while providing hands-on troubleshooting and field support as needed.
The Fleet Maintenance Manager plays a critical role in minimizing equipment downtime and supporting field production. This is a hands-on leadership role that requires experience managing both personnel and complex equipment fleets in construction or utility environments.

Key Responsibilities

Fleet Operations
  • Oversee maintenance of 300+ units of utility-grade equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with preventative maintenance programs.
  • Maintain equipment reliability and uptime.
  • Service equipment to minimize operational downtime.
Personnel Management
  • Lead and manage a team of 5+ mechanics.
  • Coordinate shop workflow, labor scheduling, and technical support.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to team members.
Lifecycle Management
  • Recommend equipment replacements and purchases.
  • Support fleet planning to accommodate company growth.
Vendor & Cost Management
  • Manage outsourcing decisions for specialized repairs.
  • Control shop costs, parts, and materials.
  • Oversee environmental compliance (waste oil, hazardous materials, etc.).
Field Support
  • Provide field troubleshooting and diagnostics for critical equipment.
  • Support urgent repairs to maintain field productivity.
Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure safe maintenance practices in all shop and field activities.
  • Coordinate with safety and risk leadership to maintain compliance.
Work Environment
  • Shop, yard, and field environments.
  • Hands-on role; not desk-only.
Experience Required

  • 10+ years working on utility-grade equipment.
  • 5+ years supervising maintenance or service personnel.
  • Experience with digger derricks, bucket trucks, and heavy utility equipment.
  • Familiarity with fleet management systems and relevant software (ERPs, Microsoft Office, mobile apps).
  • Experience supporting utility, construction, or T&D power fleets.
  • Proven ability to manage large fleets and lead maintenance teams.
Preferred:
  • 15+ years working on utility-grade equipment.
  • 10+ years supervising maintenance/service personnel.
